Designed in Italian Renaissance style by Benjamin Howard Marshal, the Drake Hotel opened in 1920 as the first major hotel in Chicago’s Gold Coast. It quickly rivalled the Palmer House as the center of Chicago’s social scene. The Cape Cod Room at the Drake served dignitaries and celebrities for nearly 80 years until its closure in 2016. Afternoon Tea at the Palm Court is still served daily, as it has been for over 100 years. In 1952, newlyweds Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio spent part of their honeymoon at the Drake and would carve their initials into the Cape Cod bar‘s world famous wooden counter. Princess Diana also stayed at the Drake in 1996 during her only visit to Chicago, a year before her death.
