Established in 1848, by an act of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the Boston Public Library was the first large free municipal library in the United States. In 1888, architect Charles Follen McKim proposed a Renaissance-style design based on the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, which met approval from the library trustees. McKim’s "palace for the people” was completed in 1895, opposite Henry Hobson Richardson's Trinity Church in Copley Square.
