On April 14, 1865, just five days after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, President Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary attended a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. The well-known actor John Wilkes Booth, desperate to aid the dying Confederacy, made his way into the presidential box and shot Lincoln once in the head. Booth then jumped down to the stage, breaking his leg and shouting, “Sic Semper Tyrannis! Virginia is avenged!” before escaping through a rear door. Lincoln died the next morning at Petersen House, across the street. Booth was shot and killed 12 days later.
